How Fast Should a Business Website Load?

By Patrick Nexa — Founder, Nexalyzewebs2 min read

Speed is the first thing a visitor experiences, before design or copy. It is also one of the few quality signals that can be measured objectively — which makes it a good place to focus improvement effort.

What is a good loading time?

Aim for meaningful content appearing within about two seconds on a typical mobile connection, and for the page to become interactive shortly after. Beyond roughly three seconds, drop-off climbs sharply.

Google's Core Web Vitals give more precise targets: largest contentful paint under 2.5 seconds, minimal layout shift, and fast response to the first interaction.

Why is my website slow?

In practice, the causes repeat:

  • Huge images served at full resolution and scaled down in the browser.
  • Too many third-party scripts — chat widgets, trackers, embedded feeds.
  • Heavy page builders shipping code the page never uses.
  • No caching or compression on the server.
  • Fonts that block text from rendering.
  • Cheap, overloaded shared hosting with slow response times.

How do I test my website speed?

Use PageSpeed Insights or a similar tool, and pay attention to the mobile score rather than desktop. Then do the human test: open your site on a phone, on mobile data, away from your office WiFi.

Test the pages that matter — the home page, your main service page and the contact page — not just whichever one loads fastest.

The fixes with the biggest payoff

Start with images: correct dimensions, modern formats, compression and lazy loading below the fold. This alone often halves page weight.

Then remove scripts you do not need, cache aggressively, and make sure text renders immediately rather than waiting for a font file. Hosting is worth upgrading only after these are done.

Does speed affect search rankings?

Yes, though indirectly as much as directly. Page experience is a ranking signal, but the larger effect is behavioural: faster pages keep more visitors, and pages that keep visitors tend to perform better over time.

Frequently asked questions

Is a perfect 100 score necessary?
No. Chasing the last few points rarely changes what visitors feel. Getting from poor to good is where the value is.
Will a faster host fix everything?
Rarely. Hosting matters, but oversized images and excess scripts cause most slowness and travel with you to any host.
Do animations slow a site down?
Lightweight CSS animation is inexpensive. Large animation libraries and video backgrounds are not.
